Premier League defender opts for Tottenham, not Barcelona, as contract nears

Barcelona, seeking a new central defender for the summer transfer window, had identified several targets. While Alessandro Bastoni was the preferred choice for head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco, the club is considering more affordable alternatives if Inter’s demands prove too high.

Marcos Senesi, who is set to depart Bournemouth upon contract expiration, was one such option. The Argentine center-back had attracted interest from multiple clubs, with Spotify Camp Nou reportedly being his favored destination.

However, Barcelona’s strong pursuit of Bastoni has led to Senesi’s move to the Catalan giants falling by the wayside. Consequently, Senesi is no longer anticipating an offer from Barcelona, according to Sky Germany (via Sport).

Senesi agrees to join Tottenham Hotspur, with a contingency

Instead, Senesi is reportedly set to remain in the Premier League, having reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur. This pre-contract agreement with the London club is contingent on Brighton & Hove Albion avoiding relegation this season, as they currently sit just two points above the drop zone with four matches remaining.

Even if Senesi’s deal with Spurs were to be canceled, Barcelona is not expected to rekindle their interest. Reports suggest that a move to Italy would be his alternative, which is unwelcome news for Atletico Madrid, who have also expressed interest in the Bournemouth defender in recent months.

Should Barcelona fail to secure Bastoni this summer, Jon Martin is believed to be their backup option, now that Senesi appears to be out of contention. Representatives of the Real Sociedad defender have reportedly met with Deco recently, as Barcelona continues to finalize their transfer plans.
