Cristian Romero admite no haber sido perfecto en el Tottenham

El defensa central argentino Cristian Romero ha declarado que no fue "perfecto" durante sus cinco años en el Tottenham Hotspur, club que está a punto de dejar para unirse al Atlético de Madrid por una suma de 34.2 millones de libras esterlinas.

El último partido de Romero con los 'Spurs' fue contra el Sunderland en abril, donde tuvo que abandonar el campo entre lágrimas debido a una lesión de rodilla que lo apartó de los últimos seis encuentros de liga. En ese momento, el equipo luchaba por evitar el descenso, y el jugador generó malestar entre los aficionados al planear estar en Argentina para el partido final, con el fin de ver a su primer club, Belgrano, disputar la final del Torneo Apertura de la Primera División.

Finalmente, Romero regresó a Inglaterra para presenciar la victoria del Tottenham por 1-0 sobre el Everton, resultado que aseguró la permanencia del equipo en la máxima categoría por segunda temporada consecutiva, finalizando en la decimoséptima posición.

"Sé que no fui perfecto", publicó Romero en la plataforma X. "Pero una cosa me da paz: siempre lo di todo. Defendí esta camiseta con orgullo y con todo mi corazón".

Romero llegó al Tottenham procedente del Atalanta en 2021 y se consolidó como una pieza fundamental en la defensa, acumulando 156 apariciones.

Su momento cumbre con el club londinense fue contribuir a la consecución de su primer trofeo en 17 años, al derrotar al Manchester United en la final de la Europa League de 2025.

"Cuando llegué, tenía un sueño claro: dejar mi nombre en la historia de este club", añadió Romero. "Sabía que la única forma era a través del trabajo duro, el sacrificio y logrando algo que parecía tan difícil desde hace tanto tiempo: levantar un trofeo de nuevo. Y lo hicimos."

Argentine center-back Cristian Romero has stated that he was not "perfect" during his five years at Tottenham Hotspur, a club he is about to leave to join Atlético de Madrid for a fee of £34.2 million.

Romero's last game for the 'Spurs' was against Sunderland in April, where he had to leave the field in tears due to a knee injury that ruled him out of the last six league matches. At the time, the team was fighting to avoid relegation, and the player caused discomfort among fans by planning to be in Argentina for the final game, in order to watch his first club, Belgrano, compete in the Primera División Apertura final.

Romero eventually returned to England to witness Tottenham's 1-0 victory over Everton, a result that ensured the team's stay in the top flight for a second consecutive season, finishing in seventeenth place.

"I know I wasn't perfect," Romero posted on the X platform. "But one thing gives me peace: I always gave everything. I defended this shirt with pride and with all my heart."

Romero arrived at Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and became a fundamental piece in the defense, making 156 appearances.

His peak moment with the London club was contributing to the achievement of their first trophy in 17 years, by defeating Manchester United in the 2025 Europa League final.

"When I arrived, I had a clear dream: to leave my name in the history of this club," Romero added. "I knew the only way was through hard work, sacrifice, and achieving something that had seemed so difficult for so long: lifting a trophy again. And we did it."
